The latest reissue of this fantastic and bracing artifact is a 3xCD model, augmented with the other extant YMG studio recordings and fascinating Simon Reynolds liner notes. There really ought to be more bands like Young Marble Giants, which doesn't mean that there ought to be more bands that sound like Young Marble Giants. They came out of the nowheresville of Cardiff, Wales; they didn't particularly have a local scene to buoy them up, or a niche to fit into. What they had was an aesthetic that was totally theirs, a sound and style that essentially had no antecedents. Play any six seconds of any YMG song and you'll know exactly who you're listening to, and probably be thunderstruck by its unsentimental beauty of tone. In a year when everyone was trying to make a big noise-- but isn't that every year? It's not simply that they were quiet, although substituting a drum machine that sounded like it had a thick quilt on top of it for a human drummer was a radical move at the time. They weren't even all that quiet-- they were just in love with negative space, and their lyrics were so much about things unsaid that the space was formally appropriate.

Post a Comment. Monday, October 12, Young Marble Giants. This was an era of experimental over-reach, of bands catalysed by the punk do-it-yourself principle attempting to expand the music by embracing genres funk, reggae, jazz that in their original context relied on virtuosity and slickness. Artistic ambition and anyone-can-do-it amateurism make for uneasy bedfellows, and many of the key groups of the period made records that were closer to sketches towards an ideal of a new music than the fully-realised deal. What was? Throwing out ideas, setting challenges for band and audience alike, keeping the collective conversation moving. What this does mean, though, is that there are really just a handful of long-form recordings from the entire period that are immaculate from conception to construction. Together the tunes add up to a perfectly sequenced whole, a cohesive experience. Colossal Youth became the independent scene equivalent of a blockbuster smash on its release in early , and clearly the punters were partly responding to the sheer quality and aesthetic integrity of the record, which arrived without fanfare, seemingly from nowhere.

Fantastic Post. Howdy, I managed to download the "Singles and Salad Days" zip no problem, but the "Colossal Youth and Peel Session" link seems to just be taking me to a heap of dud advertising links.. Any advice on how to navigate through to actually get the file? Or Rho, is it possible for you to re-up to the same site as Salad Days? Can you please re-up links to Colossal Youth? I've enjoyed some of your other posts, thanks a lot!
Should I consider giving up my PhD plans, take up whatever job I can based on my commitments or I should look for somebody with whom my profession is more compatible. Just ridiculous, what do they know. Before I would just take things as they came, internalize them, be miserable about it but not voice my concern in fear of being told that I can't handle his lifestyle. The important things that keep our marriage a happy, healthy, and very loving one are the same things that keep any other marriage alive and well. Its fascinating that in so many women are defining themselves by their MD husbands like we are in s season from Mad Men. Seclusion has served to preserve their desirable traits, but it also makes it difficult to gain rapport. He told me that there is nothing in the world that is more gratifying. I don't mind long hour days but not having a companion during weekends.
